Access Mail

Ascertaining the most suitable solution is an intuitive process.

Configuring Eudora

Below are the steps for configuring Eudora 5 and Eudora 6. If you have problems, please contact our Help Desk.

Eudora's configuration is done through several labeled categories (i.e.Getting Started, Checking Mail, Incoming Mail, etc.) Clicking on a category reveals the settings for that category. The instructions below do not explain every possible option.
See the Eudora User's Manual for detailed information on these optional settings
  1. Getting Started:From the "Tools" menu, select "Options", then select the "Getting Started..." category. For this example, we'll use "Jerry Smith" as our name, and jersmith@aesasp.com as our email address.

    Real Name:Jerry Smith

    Return Address:jersmith@aesasp.com

    Mail Server (Incoming):aesasp.com

    Login name:jersmith

    SMTP Server (Outgoing):aesasp.com
  2. Checking Mail:There are only two settings on this window that need to be addressed. Check for Mail Every [ 0 ] Minutes. Zero is the recommended and default setting, which means Eudora will only check for new mail when you ask it to. If you are on a dial-up connection, this setting is the only one that makes sense. Should you set a non-zero value, indicating that you wish Eudora to check for new mail at regular intervals, please keep that number above 4 minutes. Any value less than this may cause significant performance issues for our shared systems.

    * Under "Secure Sockets when Receiving" you need to select "Required, Alternate Port" from the drop-down menu.

  3. Incoming Mail:You need to choose POP or IMAPas the method to get email

    POP IMAP
Leave Mail On Server (Check this box if you read email on more than one computer.) IMAP Mailbox Location Prefix: ~/mail/

  4. Sending Mail: The settings here assume you connect to the UO network.

    Return Address: jersmith@aesasp.com

SMTP Server: aesasp.com(Assumes UO network. If Cable, DSL, or non-UO dialup, then you need to get this setting from your provider. For example, the correct setting for Comcast cable-modem users is "smtp.comcast.net" )

[ ] Allow authentication (leave unchecked).

Secure Sockets when Sending: Select "Never" from the drop-down menu.
  5. Styled Text:Scroll down the category list until you see "Styled Text." Uncheck the "formatting toolbar" and select "Send Plain Text Only" and uncheck "Ask me each time."
  6. Advanced Network: Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the category list and select "Advanced Network" Change the "Network Buffer Size" to "8192."
  7. Finished: Click "OK" to dismiss the configuration window. Select "File" -> "Check Mail" to get email. You can test things out by sending yourself a message.
Notice:
On May 10th, 2004, several security holes were discovered in Eudora for Windows (versions 5.2.1, 6.0.3 and 6.1).
  • If you desire faster notification for new mail, please use IMAP instead of POP. IMAP connections tend to stay persistently connected which has less impact on system performance for users that check for new mail often. POP tends to setup a new connection for each check, then disconnect which can cause significant system performance issues when the mail-check interval is set too low.
Securing Eudora for Windows

Eudora, in conjunction with Internet Explorer, are susceptible to two email-based exploits that can allow the attacker to run any program they wish on your computer. Until Qualcomm, Eudora's publisher, addresses these issues, here is how to close this particular hole.
  1. Open Eudora
  2. From the Tools menu, select Options
  3. From the category list on the left, click Display
  4. Uncheck "Automatically download HTML graphics"
  5. From the category list on the left, click Viewing Mail
  6. Uncheck "Use Microsoft's viewer"
  7. Uncheck "Allow executables in HTML content"
  8. Click the OK button to finish
